SLU - 1-2 PhD students in Molecular Toxicology

Two positions open at SLU

1-2 PhD students in Molecular Toxicology

Department of Biomedicine and Veterinary Public Health, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, is looking for 1-2 PhD students in the subject field biomedical sciences, with a special focus on molecular toxicology.

The aim of the research project is to develop and use cell based biological methods to detect and identify toxic compounds in the environment, especially the aquatic environment. The assays used are based on cultured human cells that have been modified to respond to toxic compounds that activate specific signaling pathways in the cells. These methods can be used to evaluate the presence of toxic compounds in the environment, without a priori knowledge on the exact chemical structure of the toxic compounds. By combining these methods with advanced chemical analysis, it is possible to identify the toxic compound(s) and thereby potentially identify novel environmental pollutants with toxic properties.

This research project aims to develop cell based biological methods to toxicity testing and to apply the developed methods to study the presence of toxic compounds in different types of water samples (wastewater, surface water, urban storm water, drinking water).

Studies and research aiming towards a PhD degree in the field of molecular toxicology, with a special focus on the development of cell based in vitro assays for studies of toxicity. Further, the PhD student will used the developed methods to evaluate the presence of toxic compounds in water samples and in collaboration with chemists apply the principle of effect-directed analysis with the ultimate goal to identify the compounds causing toxicity. This research project involves collaboration with researchers at other departments at SLU and other universities, both within Sweden and internationally.

The PhD student will work in the research group Molecular Toxicology. We are also working closely together with research groups in the fields of ecotoxicology and food toxicology. More information about the research group can be found here:

The applicant must meet the formal requirements to be admitted to PhD education at SLU. Adequate educational background could for example be a degree on master’s level in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, toxicology, or pharmacology. Previous experience of molecular biology-methods and cell culturing is desirable, but not a requirement. A strong command of written and spoken English is essential. Excellent collaborative skills, high motivation and enthusiasm are important, as well as ability to work both independently and in a team. For this recruitment, candidates will mainly be ranked based on a qualitative evaluation of the candidate´s competence, skills, and judged capacity to successfully carry out a PhD eduation.
