Wastewater

Research keywords:

Modelling, simulation, control, benchmarking, performance evaluation

Research mission:

To promote the use of modelling and simulation as a very useful tool in practical applications, which is why we provide all our research simulations models for free for anyone who wants to use them.

Subject presentation:

IEA™s research areas within water and wastewater are automation and control in general, and mathematical modelling, simulation, benchmarking and control applied to urban water and wastewater systems and wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in particular. Lately, the research has been focusing on benchmarking of WWTPs (chairman of the IWA Task Group on Benchmarking), modelling of anaerobic digestion processes, energy efficiency, resource recovery and the water/energy nexus.

Biggest challenge/opportunities in research:

A major challenge is to decide the proper level of complexity in our models. We have so much knowledge that we want to include in our models, but that also makes them more difficult to use, calibrate and validate. So we must always search for the right balance - the purpose of the model must decide the level of complexity required. But working in the forefront of model development also provides excellent possibilities to collaborate with the best research groups in the world and create friendships for life.
