Opportunities, challenges and limitations

What is the current status on biofilm technologies in wastewater treatment? Where do we see the most successful and/or promising applications for biofilm systems and which are the limitations in Nordic countries? Which are the future applications of biofilm systems?

To answer these questions and many more, we will gather experts and practitioners from Sweden and beyond, for a two-day IWA Sweden seminar in Malmö. This seminar will cover different biofilm technologies in municipal wastewater treatment, such as the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) and the Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) technologies, for which established as well as up-and-coming applications will be presented and discussed.

Day 1 January 22

The first day will consist of three sessions where invited speakers will give us presentations on the following topics:

  • Introductory keynote: Kim Sørensen, Veolia Water Technologies – AnoxKaldnes, Sweden
  • Established biofilm processes, for example MBBR and IFAS. Keynote: Hallvard Ødegaard, NTNU, Norway
  • Up and coming technologies, for example AGS and applications for micropollutant removal Keynote: Mario Pronk, TU Delft/Royal Haskoning DHV, Netherlands
  • Biofilm processes of the future – what lies ahead? For example mainstream anammox and MABR Keynote: Susanne Lackner, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany

Preliminary schedule from 9.30 to 17.00, with dinner at the venue 19.00.

Day 2, January 23

The second day will consist of two consecutive thematic sessions/workshops with the following themes:

Thematic session #1: How to select process? – Niches for biofilms in biological wastewater treatment
In this thematic session, the choice of biofilm process is addressed in relation to reactor function and performance, together with dictating parameters such as economic costs, use of energy, carbon footprint and area requirements. Intended outcomes are to get a better view on key parameters for selecting processes and to better understand which processes are suited for specific needs.

Introductory keynote:
Simon Bengtsson (Promiko, Sweden) – A comparison of biological treatment technologies

Preliminary panel:
Christian Rosén (AnoxKaldnes VWT Sweden, Sweden)
Hallvard Ødegaard (NTNU, Norway)
Jeanette Agertved Madsen (EnviDan A/S, Denmark)
Mario Pronk (Royal Haskoning DHV, The Netherlands)
Eoin Syron (Oxymem, Ireland)
Preliminary schedule from 9.00 to 12.00.

Thematic session #2: Mainstream anammox - Experiences and conclusions of Nordic R&D
In this thematic session we will get a status update on recent Nordic research and development targeting nitritation-anammox in the mainstream. Focusing on the expectations and questions from the session attendees, an invited panel of researchers from Sweden and abroad will highlight their experiences and conclusions on the topic. The panel will present their own work as well as inspiring work by others, with plenty of time in between presentations for questions by and discussions with the session attendees.

Preliminary panel and presenters:
David Gustavsson (VA SYD/Sweden Water Research, Sweden)
Magnus Christensson (AnoxKaldnes VWT Sweden, Sweden)
Elzbieta Plaza (KTH, Sweden)
Per Henrik Nielsen (VCS, Denmark)
More TBA
Preliminary schedule from 13.00 to 15.00.
